Public Art

This is a sampling of the public artwork that we have created over the past 7 years. We work together from the original designs through the handmaking of tiles to the final mosaicing and grouting of a project. These projects often involve other people as advisers, workshop participants and people who install concrete around and under the sculptures.
Our very first project: We built a cement bench in 2007 and during the workshop with 8-10 participants we made freeze proof tiles to fit every curve of the structure. They were glazed, fired and installed on the bench.  In a big community event the bench was transported from the studio to its designated location
Mary's Bench Corner of Corry St and Xenia Ave
downtown Yellow Springs. This became "Mary's Bench", a tribute to a member of our Community Pottery Studio.

In the last several years we were commissioned
YEllow Springs Library
to create two additional outdoor benches, both to
commemorate family members who had recently passed away.  In both cases we met with the families several  times to gather information about their loved ones and to talk about images or words they wanted to include in the design.
Yellow Springs Bike Trail
In February of 2009 we held an artist in residence workshop at the Antioch School in Yellow Springs. Children from Nursery to 6th grade worked with clay and the theme of birds. A mural of birds was installed on the outside wall of the school; the children made all tiles and the layout of the mural.

In 2010, Beth created the "Springs" sculpture,
sponsored by several local groups through a sculpture contest. The site was chosen and Beth did research on the history of that particular park. Handmade and granite tiles were created
and used to make up the front and back of this rather large sculpture. It has become a favorite picture taking
location for visitors to Yellow Springs.

New trashcans were needed in the downtown Yellow Springs area. We decided to try our hand at making an original handmade tiled one for the town.
Our theme was opossums, they like garbage.
After some research into their true shapes and expressions, the mosaic was created, using brightly colored leaves, rocks, snakes, etc. as contrasts to the opossum critters.
